The First Page

Introduction 

The goal of this assignment was to create the first page image for my magazine photo story by using 

the methods we learned in class and videos. Some of these skills included masking, using multiple 

layers, filters, and using smart objects. Today, I am going to explain how these features help by 

utilizing non destructive editing tools.

Multiple Layers

To start out the first page of my photo story, I went looking for two images that would look well with 

on on top of the other. Once I found the picture of the man, i had to find a background for him. The 

background needed to be 8.75" by 11.5" to fit the magazine, so I made the background image exactly 

that and put the picture of the man on top of the background.

Masks

After combining the background and the foreground pictures in photoshop, I moved to masking the 

foreground layer. This allowed me to make the man transparent so that I could touch up and of the 

borders that looked choppy. So if a user adds grey paint it partially hides the adjustment, but if they 

use black it hides all adjustments

Smart Objects

These are layers that have image data from vector or raster images where they preserve the image 

source content along with the original characteristics (Adobe, 2019). This allows the user to make 

nondestructive edits without having to worry about messing anything up. Smart objects are beneficial 

to us because it allows edits to automatically update to anything that it's linked to.

Filters

Finally, I added filters to each of the layers. For both the background and the man standing, I 

sharpened the image and also reduced the noise. These filters allowed the rocks to seem a little more 

hard and the background pops out at you.
